Figure humaine (Human Figure), FP 120, by Francis Poulenc is a cantata for double mixed choir of 12 voices composed in 1943 on texts by Paul Éluard including "'Liberté". Written during the Nazi occupation of France , it was premiered in London in English by the BBC in 1945.
This collection of Poulenc’s choral works is centered on his masterpiece, Figure Humaine. Even though it is only 20 minutes in length, the work is a supreme test of stamina, technical agility, range, aural skill and musicianship.

The major work here is a cantata, the so-called 'Figure Humaine' (probably best translated as 'The Face of Mankind'), to poems written secretly during the German occupation of France during World War II by Poulenc's self-admitted favorite poet, Paul Éluard.
[Le Figure Humaine is] not only one of Poulenc's greatest achievements, but one of the 20th century's most extraordinary choral pieces, with its waves of voices climaxing in the great shouts of Liberté in the closing moments, which Tenebrae control quite beautifully.

Figure humaine was premiered in English by the BBC on 25 March 1945, then in Brussels (Belgium) in French on 2 December 1946 by the Chœurs de la radiodiffusion flamande under the direction of Paul Collaer. The French premiere took place at the Concerts de la Pléiade in Paris on 22 May 1947.
I do believe that Poulenc´s 12-part Figure humaine is the most beautiful and impressive a cappella choral work that I know. The poet Eluard and composer Poulenc formed a perfect match. Eluard's poignant and sinister surrealistic texts are very moving, and their wonderfully expressive language depicts the horrors of the Second World War.
